Doula

A doula is a trained professional who provides non-medical emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. While your midwife focuses on your medical care, a doula is there to help you feel supported, informed, and empowered throughout your birth experience—whether at home or in the hospital.
How a Doula Can Help:
Prepare you for birth with information, relaxation techniques, and birth planning
Offer comfort during labor through massage, breathing, and positioning
Support your partner so they feel confident and involved
Advocate for your wishes and help you communicate with your care team
Provide postpartum support, including breastfeeding help and newborn care
At Surrey Mama Midwifery, we work closely with experienced doulas who share our commitment to compassionate, family-centered care. If you’d like to include a doula in your birth team, please let us know—we’d love to connect you.
What We
Offer
A doula is a valuable addition to a woman's birth team. They provide continuous emotional and physical support to the mother throughout her pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. Doulas are trained professionals who offer guidance and education to help women make informed decisions about their birth experience. They do not provide medical care, but rather focus on creating a and empowering birth experience for the mother and her partner.
During pregnancy, a doula can help the mother prepare for childbirth by providing information about the process, discussing birth preferences, and offering relaxation techniques. During labor, a doula can provide comfort measures such as massage, breathing techniques, and positioning to help the mother cope with contractions. They can also act as an advocate for the mother, ensuring that her wishes are respected and communicated to the medical staff.
After the birth, a doula can provide support with breastfeeding, newborn care, and emotional adjustment to motherhood. They can also help the mother process her birth experience and provide referrals to other resources if needed.
Overall, a doula's role is to provide compassionate and non-judgmental support to the mother and her partner throughout the entire birth journey.
